A message from the Commander
Hi all. I hope we all had a great summer. Donna and I had 9 day's sailing in the north channel. We took the Ferry over to Manitoulin Island and set the boat in at Little Current.
From there it was blissful cruising. Little Current has new finger docks, which makes it easier to find a place to tie up. Be careful there is a good current under these docks, so you might need some help.
The power squadron boating course is well on the way with Malcolm Young once again teaching. We have 8 students and every one is doing well.
A VHF radio course will be put on early next year. Also We are trying to coordinate a bus trip to the Toronto boat show in January 2007.
For things going on in the district. The rank structure is going to disappear. Also the uniforms used at functions can be substituted with a suit, which has less formality.
The district has purchased a flare training kit from Orin and has donated it to all the squadrons.
Now for a word about the PCOC card. Many people get it confused with the boating course. As a matter of fact in the last few months some people have got CPS mixed up with the yacht club, the municipality of Kincardine, and with the rescue boat. CPS is an international organization, to promote boating safety, and camaradery, and we have no direct affiliations with these other groups. We do however have good relations with all of the others, and many of our members are also members of the other groups.
The boating course takes one night a week for thirteen weeks with homework it is challenging but not manditatory. On the other hond the PCOC card takes about one hour to look over the boating regulations and pass a 50 question test with 75 per cent pass mark, it is mandatory for most power boat classes now, and will be mandatory for all in 2009. The boating course is much much more in depth, and covers more than the basics. To be a safe boater on Lake Huron, the boating course should really be considered. Please look at the training page for more detail on what is covered in these courses
The current boating course is under way, but you can prepare now for the 2007 boating course which will commence next September. The PCOC card is included as part of the boating course
Have a grand season, and for next year I wish you all safe boating
